Romans Foundational Grace Doctrine

By, Adrienne Jason

Once you have believed the Gospel of your salvation, it's essential to read and study God's Word rightly divided.

I recommend starting with the book of Romans. This book will establish you in the doctrines of grace.

Before diving into my Romans study series (available as videos), I suggest reading all of the book of Romans first on your own. Then, feel free to listen to my Romans Bible study playlist to help you with studying it.

In Romans 1:8-12 (KJB), Paul addresses the saints (believers), praying that they be established in the sound grace doctrine presented in his epistle (Romans).

Romans 1:8-12 KJB

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

10 Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

11 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;

12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

The layout of the books of Romans-Philemon is specifically designed to establish and edify the believer in sound grace doctrine. Romans provides the foundational teachings of the grace faith, including the condition of unsaved man, the Gospel of your salvation (Christ's death, burial, and resurrection as atonement for our sins), salvation by grace through faith alone, our identity in Christ, the death of the old man and new life in Christ, how to walk in the Spirit, dispensational changes, loving service to other believers, and more.

Here is the basic layout of the edification process in this book:

  • Romans 1-4 is about justification.

  • Romans 5 is about eternal security.

  • Romans 6-8 is about our identity in Christ

  • Romans 9-11 is about dispensational changes and what God is doing today.

  • Romans 12 - is about service as a Believer and member of the body of Christ.

  • Romans 13 is regarding authority and how believers should respond to them.

  • Romans 14 is about dealing with weaker brethren by grace.

  • Romans 15 - is about oneness and glorifying God.

  • Romans 16 - is regarding working in unison with fellow believers and a warning to avoid anything contrary to sound grace doctrine.
