What are we saved from?

by, Adrienne Jason

In order for anyone to be saved today in the dispensation of the grace of God, we are to recognize first of all that we are sinners and cannot save ourselves. Then, we are to simply believe how that Christ Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again for our justification (see 1 Cor 15:1-4). The moment that you believe that gospel, you are saved!

But, what exactly are we saved from? In this study we will learn that we are saved from several things. I'll be using some scriptures to explain this, however there are many more verses that can also support this study but to keep it simple and short, I'll just include a few verses for each thing that we are saved from.

1) Eternal death, judgment and punishment

2) Satan's kingdom

3) God's coming wrath on the world

4) Condemnation and law-keeping

5) Sin and the Flesh

6) Religion and false doctrines

7) Meaninglessness

8) Eventually, all forms of suffering (after the rapture)

✝️ Saved from eternal death, judgment and punishment:

First of all, once we have recognized our sin nature and then believed the Gospel of our Salvation (Christs death, burial and resurrection as atonement for our sins), we are then saved from eternal death, God's judgment and God's punishment. All unbelievers are spiritually dead in their trespasses and sins. If you think about it, the world is predominantly filled with spiritually dead people! Their flesh is still alive and they still have emotions and a mind, but they are dead spiritually.

Ephesians 2:1-3 KJB says,

"And you hath he quickened [made spiritually alive in Christ], who were dead [spiritually dead] in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past [before salvation] ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air [Satan], the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience [all unbelievers operate according to Satan’s spirit working in and through them]: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

Because we were sinners, the punishment for our sins was death.

Romans 6:23 KJB "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

Unbelievers (unsaved people) are also subject to God's wrath (see Romans 2:8-9).

All people who never get saved and who die in their sins will be judged at the Great White Throne Judgment (see Revelation 20:11-15 KJB) by the Lord Jesus Christ.

✝️ But as believers, because we have been saved by Gods grace the moment that we simply believed the Gospel (which is how that Christ Jesus died for our sins, was buried and rose again for our justification), we are SAVED FROM eternal death, judgment at the Great White Throne and from eternal punishment in the lake of fire.

Romans 5:1

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

(See also Romans 5:9-10)

✝️ Not only are we made spiritually alive in Christ and saved from eternal death and punishment in the lake of fire, but we now have God's righteousness imputed to us, and we are even seated with Christ in the Heavenly places!

Romans 4:24-25

24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Ephesians 2:6

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

✝️ Another thing that we are saved from is Satan's kingdom. We go from being a part of Satan’s kingdom, to being a part of God's kingdom. We become a very member of Christ's body as well.

Colossians 1:13

“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”

(See also Romans 8:16-17, Ephesians 5:30, 1 Corinthians 12: 12-13)

✝️ We are also delivered from the wrath to come, which is the 7 year tribulation on the earth (also known as "Jacob's trouble).

1 Thessalonians 1:10

“And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.”

1 Thessalonians 5:9

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

✝️ As believers, we are no longer condemned by God and if we walk in the Spirit, we live free of self-condemnation as well.

Romans 8:1 - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

(See also Romans 5:1)

✝️ We are also now dead to the law.

Romans 7:4

“Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”

(See also Romans 7:6, Romans 3:19-21, Romans 6:14, Romans 10:4, Galatians 3:11, 13, Galatians 5:4, Colossians 2:13-16)

✝️ We are also delivered from sin and the flesh. This doesn't mean that as believers we never sin, but that sin doesn't have total dominion over us anymore, and we can now choose to walk in the Spirit instead of after the flesh. In heaven, with our new glorified bodies, we will never sin

Romans 6:18

Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:22

But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

(See also Romans 7:5-6, Romans 8:2-4)

✝️ We are also delivered from religion and false doctrines as we "come unto the knowledge of the truth" (1 Tim 2:4). God's will for all people is that we be saved and then come unto the knowledge of the truth. We need God's Spirit in our spirit in order to understand the scriptures. When we believe the gospel of the grace of God, then we have God's Spirit in us. Then, His spirit helps us to understand spiritual things (God's word). But we must also rightly divide the scriptures as 2 Timothy 2:15 tells us, or else we will get mixed up in understanding God's word, His will for us, what God is doing today in the dispensation of grace, our identity in Christ, how we are saved today, our blessed hope etc.

1 Corinthians 2:14

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

1 Corinthians 2:16

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

(See also Romans 8:6, 1 Corinthians 2:5, 1 Corinthians 3:19)

✝️ Again, we are also delivered from religion. Religion is man's attempt to make themselves righteous by trying to keep the law in the energy of and efforts of their flesh.

Galatians 2:16

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

(See also Galatians 2:19-21, Galatians 3:11)

✝️ As we study God's word rightly divided we are saved from all kinds of false doctrines, denominationalism, and even from narcissistic teachings and teachers as well because Paul warns and admonishes us to avoid such people and their teachings.

Romans 16:17-18

17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.

18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

(See also 2 Tim 3: 13-14)

✝️ We are also saved from living a life without any real meaning or purpose. As believers, we can now serve God as we choose to walk in the Spirit. When we serve God, our lives not only have meaning but we can also produce things that are of eternal value. It wasn't possible to serve God before our salvation. Anything that doesn't bring glory to God will burn up one day, so we have an opportunity now as believers to serve God and He gets the glory because it's His Spirit and His word working in and through us as we yield to Him that enables us to serve Him. This will also lead to our rewards in heaven (things of eternal value).

2 Cor 5:20

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

1 Corinthians 3:12-13

12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;

13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

(See also 1 Corinthians 15:58, Romans 12:1, Colossians 3:23-24, 1 Corinthians 3:9, Ephesians 2:10)

✝️ And finally, because we have a blessed hope, we will one day be completely delivered of all suffering. This is our Blessed Hope. Our blessed hope includes the rapture, receiving our glorified bodies, receiving possible rewards in heaven and living and even reigning with Christ in the Heavenly places forever- with no pain, sickness, disease, sin, evilness or death.

It's important to note however that as believers, we do still suffer while we are here on earth as ambassadors for Christ. But our suffering is NOT for nothing and God will work all things together for our good! Our suffering now produces patience, experience and hope in our inner man. These things have eternal value. This also leads to rewards in heaven. We suffer especially as we choose to live godly in Christ Jesus. We don't suffer in order to be saved, rather we suffer because we are saved and because we live in a sin cursed world where Satan doesn't like us and has a policy of evil against us.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Romans 5:3-4

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope.

2 Corinthians 4:17

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

Romans 8:18 - For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Ephesians 2:6-7

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

1 Cor 15:52

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

(See also 1 Cor 4:9-13, Philippians 1:29, 2 Corinthians 1:5, 2 Timothy 2:12, Revelation 21:4, 1 Cor 15: 47-49, Ephesians 1:10).

So, to be saved unto eternal life, understand that you are a sinner and you cannot save yourself. Then, simply believe how that Christ Jesus died for your sins, was buried and rose again for your justification.
